Magic Pony, June 10 - July 4, 2010

In 2010, Luminato commissioned LA-based art collective FriendsWithYou to create a public art installation entitled Rainbow City in Toronto’s Queen’s Park.

As long time collaborators of the duo, Magic Pony conceived of a series of expanded, city-wide satellite events to spread FriendsWithYou’s message of “Magic, Luck, and Friendship” across the festival centre into an immersive FriendsWithYou Festival.

Magic Pony & FriendsWithYou created the Wish Come True Pop-Up Shop, in which we collaborated to design, produce, and merchandise a range of products including apparel, art prints, lapel pins and chocolate bars. Leading up to and during the festival, we produced an integrated media campaign encompassing in-store events, online design contests, social media content, and a limited edition Magic Pony x FriendsWithYou newspaper.

The Wish Come True Pop-Up Shop was launched with an in-store artist signing, the premiere of FriendsWithYou’s short film Superstars, and an appearance by a real-life Rainbow King and his band to greet fans and bless them with good luck. Our campaign worked in tandem with the overall communications strategy of Luminato to create compelling graphic imagery and design solutions crossing multiple platforms.

Magic Pony presented another aspect of FWY’s diverse artistic practice with Daydreamers, their first solo art exhibition in Canada. This gallery exhibition of paintings and drawings highlighted the origins of Rainbow City and the Rainbow King - uniting multi-faceted festival outreach and contemporary art into a cohesive physical experience, and connecting FWY to the larger artistic community in Toronto.
