Mamechiyo Bio

Mamechiyo is the creative force behind the popular revival of the Japanese kimono as everyday wear in the 21st century. Her contemporary and pleasingly unexpected designs have been snatched up by young women in her Tokyo shop, Mamechiyo Modern (this is also the name of her original brand), and celebrities have modeled her wearable art on Japanese television and in fashion magazines.

In the summer of 2005, Mamechiyo's yukata, or summer kimonos, went on sale at major department stores across Japan. This project was a smashing success, making Mamechiyo’s designs widely recognizable to a nation of trendsetters. With her partner Masataka Miyanaga, she has published two books, Mamechiyo’s Kimono Modern and Mamechiyo’s Kimono a la Mode. Both are considered handbooks for enjoying “modern kimono life” and have a huge following that continues to grow.

Instead of limiting herself to the kimono medium, Mamechiyo has brought her “world of kimono” to a wide array of other projects: her works have ranged from designs for the fashion doll Blythe to a flower-laden My Little Pony for the 2005 Pony Project. Mamechiyo even has created a series of packages for sanitary napkins, which turned into a collector’s item in Japan.

Long loved in her native Japan, Mamechiyo is now ready to bring her harmonious mixture of tradition and innovation to the western hemisphere. This is her first solo exhibition outside of Japan.
